Red Scarf Girl- Characterization
The characterization of Ji-li is mainly based on how the Cultural Revolution affected her family. The author shows how she acted, during the Cultural Revolution. Basically speaking they were like zombies whatever the leader told them, was true or they had to do it; without complaint. Ji-li Jiang uses the characteristics of the Cultural Revolution to make people act a certain way. For example, young people think Chairman Mao is like a god. Ji-li like them, she thought Mao Zedong as god. Also, young people took action to help the Cultural Revolution. This act told young people that parents are less important then Chairman Mao because he said so. Also, since Ji-li's status is not very good, that affects Ji-li's family and herself as well.In the beginning, Ji-li is very active towards Cultural actions, is smart, and is not afraid to exceed but after the Cultural revolution starts, she becomes afraid to exceed, scared, and frightened. Her dream, before the Cultural Revolution, was to become a Red Guard, but after the Cultural Revolution, her dream is crushed for now and she fulfills her mother's last wish; to look after her younger siblings.

Yo Jen~
This is Carol speaking :).
Well I read So Far From the Bamboo Grove. It is an interesting book! :)
Well, one thing I notice is that I think your main character's mother had left or maybe died. Well, in our book, Yoko's mother dies. Even though Yoko is a youngest sibling, she misses her brother (who got separated because of his job) and she shows great care for her sister Ko. I think that is the same part. And in my blog, you said that Ji-li complains a lot. Yoko does too, however one day, after seeing her sister working hard to get money to live better with Yoko, she finds out how to place others on the top sometimes. She shows that by buying her sister some tea, while she could have bought her new shoes she wanted. I think that our character had become more mature as the story went. Well keep on reading~ Reading is GREAT BABY~LOL :)
ur reading red scarf girl too!!! (:
anyways, u did a really good job of characterizing Ji-Li. I would die if something like that happened to me. well, i say that the cultural revolution was a really bad movement to have started. soooo, ya. luv u lots jenny!!! (i'm gonna get u back!) haha. (:
Great job!!!!!
It sounds very hard for this girl. I think that as in many books there is always a war that may be with guns, or may be more of a self and small war(aka conflict). I cant imagine being in her situation =(
Keep up the good work!!!
